Make sure to not touch the shrinky dinks with your hand to flatten – they are very hot. You can also put a layer of parchment paper on top of the Shrinky Dink designs to help to keep them flat. If the shrink plastic you’re working with only has smooth shiny surfaces, you can use light sandpaper to gently scuff the surface if you’re using colored pencils. It should only take a few seconds to get it to flatten out nicely.

Remove from the oven when Shrinky Dink plastic has been laying flat for 30 seconds. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place your designs on top. Use colored pencils on the rough side of the film. Line up the shrink film over your template and tape it down so it does not move. We found the best temperature to cook plastic shrink film is 325°F for 1-3 minutes.
If using a heat gun, you’ll start to see your shrinky dink move and curl, as the first parts of the shrink plastic in the design shrink down. You can give it a helping hand by covering it with the back of ceramic tile, to ensure it flattens out completely. It’s a wonderful and inexpensive craft material that’s perfect for beginners and kids. Add designs with permanent markers, or color them with colored pencils or soft pastels. While they were still warm, I flattened each with a metal spatula. After the container is cut in half, the kids cut off the rough edges to make a flat square for drawing.
